A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled persistent apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was requested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
